August is a Breastfeeding awareness month.
For those who choose to breastfeed and are able to continue – the experience can be truly amazing. Being able to provide the best nutrition for your child – is in itself incredible. Deeply bonding with your child, alongside the multitude of long-term health benefits, including your child’s development and better resilience to illness – are priceless.
But – none of that comes without sacrifice. As rewarding as breastfeeding can be for you and your child – It is also very physically and mentally challenging.
Unfortunately, parents in the US are not guaranteed parental leave. Those who get to spend time with their little ones right after birth are rarely offered more than 12 weeks total. On top of that, workplaces rarely provide sufficient support, including proper lactation rooms and time allowance – making the breastfeeding journey that much harder.
To all breastfeeding parents out there – you are amazing! We see you! I hope your journey is going splendidly and your workplace is exceptional in providing all the support you need. Keep reading for interesting facts and practical information that could be useful on your journey.
And for those parents who chose other solutions – whether it’s a formula, donated milk, or wet nurse – no one has a right to judge you.
Breast is best – but fed is always better.
